At the foot of towering granite spires reminiscent of the high Sierra, plunging cascades feed alpine Reed Lakes. On the edge of the vast wilderness of the Talkeetna Mountains, this mountain world is unlike any other near Anchorage. Watch for ptarmigan, marmots, ground squirrels, pikas, northern shrikes, and golden eagles. The road is rutted and quite bumpy but mostly level. It requires fording a small stream. Standard passenger cars with good clearance generally can make it if driven carefully. In winter, park in a plowed turnout along the Hatcher Pass Road near the beginning of Archangel Road or at the Gold–Mint trailhead, and take a shovel in case your car gets stuck.
