Pioneer Peak rises 6,400 feet over the Matanuska Valley, its rocky ramparts intimidating even to experienced mountaineers. But try the Knik River– Pioneer Ridge Trail for steep but easy access to the upper reaches of this magnificent peak. From up high, view the expanse of the Knik Glacier and elusive 13,176-foot Mount Marcus Baker, highest of the Chugach Mountains. The trail starts upward immediately. Within an hour, Knik Glacier and 10,610-foot Mount Goode are visible, the glacier 4 miles wide and more than 25 miles long, the peak sharp and ice-covered. This lower trail can be thick with grass after midsummer and can be muddy in a few places anytime.
