The walk to The Perch is an easy introduction to the stunningly beautiful Eagle River valley, just 40 minutes from Alaska’s largest city. The walk is on a well-maintained, mostly level trail through a wooded canyon with 6,500-foot mountain walls shooting skyward all around. This is a good family hike anytime but is especially welcome in early spring or late fall when other hikes are closed by snow. The route lies along the Iditarod National Historic Trail, which in its heyday ran between Seward and the Interior goldfields. Ambitious backpackers can follow it well beyond The Perch to the Crow Pass trailhead near Girdwood, 26 miles distant.
