The Turnagain Arm Trail, which follows an old wagon road through the woods high above Turnagain Arm, offers good walking much of the year, spiced with occasional spectacular views of Turnagain Arm and the mountains on the Kenai Peninsula. Watch for white beluga whales, Dall sheep, bears, and the first wildflowers of spring. The trail predates Anchorage (it was reportedly developed in 1910 as a telegraph line) and was used as an alternate trail from Seward to Knik when snow conditions necessitated. The main winter trails went over Crow Pass and Indian Pass. Turnagain Arm Trail offers opportunities for good family outings and can be hiked in short or long segments. South of McHugh Creek, during periods of new and full moons, watch for bore tides 45 minutes to an hour after the Anchorage low tide (check tide books, available at grocery stores and banks, for tide times). Snow is seldom deep enough for skiing, so the trail often provides good winter hiking. Historically, the trail extended beyond Girdwood, but southeast of Windy Corner the trail is now obscured by natural land sloughing and highway construction.
