A moderate trail traveling by a lake, with views of mountains and glaciers ending at a woodcutter’s camp. Sturgill’s Landing, the site of a woodcutter’s camp in a small, rocky cove on Taiya Inlet, dates from Skagway’s early days. The Forest Service has built a small camp and picnic area on the point above the beach, with tables, fire pits, and an outhouse. There are a very few tent spots nestled among the rocks, pines, and spruces, and a small creek empties onto the cove’s log-strewn beach just to the east. The view from the beach takes in the mountains and glaciers across the fjord, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a seal or two in the ocean. Also check out the miscellaneous equipment left behind from the woodcutting operation.
