The trail leads across a steep southwest slope that receives lots of spring sunshine, so the trail is one of the earliest near Anchorage to open as the landscape melts. There are numerous route options on Turnagain Arm trail from short interpretive loops to longer thru-hike options. All four trailheads are just a few miles south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway. The nearest to Anchorage, the Potter Creek Trailhead, is just south of the south end of Potter’s Marsh, at Seward Highway Mile 115.1, 0.1 mile south of Chugach State Park headquarters. Turn east into the parking area. The other three trailheads, from northwest to southeast, are the McHugh Creek State Wayside, Mile 111.9; Rainbow, Mile 108.4; and Windy Corner, Mile 106.7. All are on the north, or mountain, side of the highway.
