Camping, ?shing, berries, and a beautiful glacially-fed lake are top reasons for hiking the Ptarmigan Lake Trail. A long, blue-green glacial lake set below the icy summit of Andy Simons Mountain, Ptarmigan Lake makes a fine family backpack trip, a fairly easy hike of 3.5 miles from the trailhead to the west shore of the lake. The trail continues another 4 miles to the east end of the lake. If you aren’t up for a backpack trip, consider camping at the Ptarmigan Creek Campground and day hiking to the west end of the lake. Though the trail is popular, the lake still offers decent solitude. Watch and listen for moose, bears, and coyotes in the neighborhood.
