The Pine Beach Trail at the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is one of south Alabama’s most popular hiking destinations, and with good reason. This 3.4-mile out-and-back is a transitional coastal hike beginning in a beautiful maritime wetland with Spanish moss–draped oak trees and deep rows of saw palmetto and wild rosemary, and ending at the pristine and secluded white-sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Many species of animals call this area home, including the American alligator, bald eagle, osprey, and Alabama beach mouse. This is also a prime nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles.
