The area just south of Tallahassee is known for its karst topography, a layer of limestone that has been weathered and carved over the centuries by the elements to form a system of caves, holes, and tunnels. The Leon Sinks Loop allows hikers to explore this geology with excellent examples of wet sinkholes, natural bridges, depressions, and disappearing streams. The area is literally littered with dozens of sinkholes, which are all part of what is known as the Woodville Karst Plain, and the best way for us to see these marvelous sinkholes is by hiking the Leon Sinks Loop. The Woodville Karst Plain is an area of limestone from just south of Tallahassee that slopes to the Gulf of Mexico. Because of the porous nature of the limestone, water is allowed to flow freely through, causing erosion or what is known as karst.
