A popular river for all five Pacific salmon. Rising on the western slopes of the Wood River Mountains, the Togiak drains the southeastern quadrant of the Togiak Wildlife Refuge. With 4.2 million acres, the refuge is about the same size as Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. It is a barren land of steep mountains, broad, swampy river valleys, bears and birds, and, yes, hordes of mosquitoes. But who cares a whit for that buzzing sound in your ears when your drag’s screaming and your rod’s bent to the breaking point and you’ve got maybe a dozen more turns before your spool is bare? That’s king salmon fishing and that’s why the Togiak is so popular. Species: Salmon. Angling methods: spin, and fly-fishing.
