Bucolic river valley in the midst of eastern bustle. Cooperative rainbows and selective browns, but unscheduled releases from dams pose problems for fish and anglers. The sign, tacked on an elm on the river says legions, “Housatonic River Trout Management Area—All Trout Must Be Returned Without Avoidable Injury.” For about nine miles, from the bridge carrying Routes 112 and 7 across the Housy near Lookout Point downstream to Cornwall Bridge, the river is a rarity among the rare: a marvelous trout stream flowing through a tranquil and historic farming valley within an hour’s drive of a quarter of the population of the United States. Species: Rainbow, brown. Angling methods: spin, bait, and fly-fishing.
