This short but strenuous hike begins on the Art Smith Trail at the base of an off-leash dog park in Palm Desert and links with the 8-mile Hopalong Cassidy Trail, which opened in 2006 as a connector to the Art Smith and Mirage Trails. Look for the large art smith trail sign at the northern end of the park and follow the sand trail north as it parallels a wooden fence. Soon you’ll come to a gap in the fence; go through it and then follow the narrow trail up a steep hill covered in rocks and desert vegetation. At 0.25 mile, the narrow trail ends at a gated rifle road. Walk around the gate and continue up the rifle road to a scenic overlook with a picnic table, thatched roof overhang, and spectacular views of Palm Desert and the sprawling Coachella Valley.
