This out-and-back hike begins with a flat streamside stroll through fan palms and ancient rock mortars, then climbs past cactus scrub to expansive views of the desert and San Jacinto Mountains. Fifteen miles long, Palm Canyon Trail extends deep into the Indian Canyons, hooking up with several other dirt trails and fire roads. This hike stops at the Stone Pools, a striking cluster of rock gorges that beckon you to rest and frolic a bit before turning around. There is no shade after the first mile, so a hat and sunscreen are essential.
