Climbing Independence Pass is something to write home about. It is one of the most difficult paved passes in North America, and perhaps the most beautiful. This iconic ride is a rite of passage for Colorado road bikers. The elevation is serious, starting over 9,000 feet and topping out over 12,000. Even the traffic gets scary on this route, with its slightly narrow roads and lack of shoulder. And it’s always raining up on Independence Pass. And that rain is cold. Needless to say, if you embark on this ride, make sure to carry the necessary gear. If there’s any question about the weather, it’s a good idea to bring a waterproof shell, thermal top, tights—and don’t forget the warm gloves and hat.
