Pedestal Rocks Trail is one of the best trails in this Ozarks park. In addition to exploring the geologic wonders of the weathered limestone “pedestals,” the remote area also offers caves, an abundance of wildlife and wildflowers, and spectacular views of the north fork of the Illinois Bayou. Hike the trail in October for the best chance to see the surrounding forest brightly adorned in fall colors. Found in the heart of the Ozarks, the Bayou Ranger District of the Ozark National Forest offers visitors beautiful views, towering bluff s, unusual rock formations, crystal-clear streams, and densely forested woodlands. The Pedestal Rocks Scenic Area has two trails, the Pedestal Rocks Trail and the King’s Bluff Trail. This guide highlights the 2.2-mile Pedestal Rocks Trail, but one could easily extend this day hike by adding on the 1.7-mile King’s Bluff Trail, which features a waterfall that is over 100 feet high. If you have the time and ability, the King’s Bluff Trail is well worth your while. A vault toilet and several picnic benches are available near the parking area.
