The short hike from Bothe–Napa Valley State Park to the historic Bale Grist Mill is a great hike for history lovers. The hike starts near the pioneer cemetery then climbs over a low hill and descends to the impressive remains of the mill’s diversion pond. It then connects to the impressive gristmill, a fascinating glimpse of a bygone era. The Bale Grist Mill is a fantastic slice of old California history. Built in 1846, the mill processed Napa Valley grain into flour or meal and functioned as a gathering place for many of the valley’s residents in the nineteenth century. Today the mill has been restored and is a great opportunity to witness what life was like in that era. It also offers a fascinating glimpse of the impressive engineering employed by people in the nineteenth century.
