Passing through tidal marshes, beside levees, and next to the Petaluma River, the hike connecting the Alman Marsh to a loop through Schollenberger Park is a pleasant, easy trip along southern Sonoma County’s Petaluma River. The Petaluma River drains a significant part of southern Sonoma County. Rising at the northern end of the Petaluma flood plain, the river travels 18 miles to San Pablo Bay. Most of the river is a long tidal estuary, heavily governed by the tide. The lower 14 miles, beginning in downtown Petaluma, are navigable, and barges and private boats frequently travel the river.
