Despite the presence of major forestry and mining operations, the wild coastline and steep rock face in Quatsino Sound remain much the same as they have for thousands of years. The sound offers both pristine wilderness and rigorous paddling, but most interesting is that Quatsino is still distinctly unpopulated by kayakers, and paddlers rarely cross paths. With the rugged shoreline on one side and the brilliant, unrestrained blue Pacific Ocean on the other, one cannot help but realize that the picturesque and tranquil sound will soon be discovered. With Quatsino Sound as your destination, you can depart from Coal Harbour and paddle west to Winter Harbour, or vice versa. Paddling the east to west route will sometimes place you in a head-on position with howling winds, but either direction works. If you are launching from Coal Harbour, make sure your departure coincides with slack tide so you can run with an ebb tide.
