Rimmed with campgrounds, this isolated reservoir provides boating and fishing in a scenic, forested mountain location. In the 1850s, the gold miners were snowbound at La Porte. Some Norwegians made traditional long skis steered with a pole. These led to some of the earliest ski races in the United States. Today the deep snows around La Porte still attract winter recreation, including Boy Scout Frostbite Camporees and snowmobiling. Fishing is very popular for German brown and rainbow trout and catfish. Swimming is pleasant at the day-use beaches. Summer days are warm, but the nights are cool. Spring and autumn days have fewer motorboats and cooler weather. Campgrounds are open from June 1 through October 31, snow permitting.
