Wildlife and fish abound at this huge remote gem bounded by mountain forest and high desert. Cascade mountain forests, Great Basin Desert, and Modoc Lava Plateau all come together at Eagle Lake. California’s second-largest natural lake is a closed basin, meaning a few streams flow in, but no streams flow out. As a result, the lake has accumulated salts that make the water alkaline. A product of this circumstance are the Eagle Lake rainbow trout. Fisheries biologists believe Eagle Lake trout to be a subspecies adapted to the lake’s alkaline waters, where no other trout will survive. The popular trout quickly grow to 18 inches long and weigh 3 to 5 pounds. Two fish per day is the limit.
