Moodus is a popular reservoir with a fair amount of development and high-speed boating. Best paddling is in early spring and in fall. For more solitude in summer, head to the deep southeast cove with its dense patches of watershield. Expect to see wood ducks, other waterfowl, and green and great blue herons. The reservoir provides excellent paddling, particularly on a calm spring day when the shorelines come alive with nesting songbirds and spectacular wood ducks try to hide in the marshy coves. You could easily spend a day on this shallow reservoir, exploring the many long, sinewy coves and watching for painted turtles amid the floating pond vegetation.
