The Thunder Bay area scenery evokes awe in visitors. It is easy to see why the Ojibwa believed that Mount McKay as the home of the Thunderbirds. When clouds enshroud the thousand-foot-high peak and thunder is heard, it is said that the Thunderbirds of Ojibwa legend have returned home. The entrance to Thunder Bay is marked by two huge cliff walls, those of Cape Thunder on the mainland and Pie Island. From the middle of entrance to the bay, the high cliff walls of Pie Island rise more than 800 feet above the lake to the summit of Mount Le Paté (elevation 1,461 feet). currently offers topo maps from the entire United States.
