This trip is similar to the Susie Islands route in terms of scenery, but because the islands are Crown land, camping is permitted. The islands are popular with the Thunder Bay cruising crowd, who have put in a few trails and even a cabin and sauna on the north end of Thompson Island. It’s not quite wilderness paddling, but the Pie Island vistas and the numerous rock cliffs of these islands make this a worthwhile paddle, and there are quiet beaches for camping if you prefer solitude. The linear shape of the chain of islands and the many sections of cliffs suggest that, like Pigeon Point, the islands are one long diabase (similar to basalt) dike. The flat tops of the mesas around Thunder Bay and on Pie Island also consist of a layer of diabase that is more resistant to erosion than the sedimentary rock beneath. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
