From Grandes Bergeronnes to les Escoumins is a beautiful stretch of coast with rocky shores, a historic lighthouse, and great whale watching. The route takes you around Cap de Bon-Désir, a lovely granite headland that has been set up by the marine park as a whale observation point for visitors. To learn more about the whales and seals in the area, make sure you visit the Marine Mammal Museum in Tadoussac before you start your trip, and stop in at Cap de Bon-Désir to see the lighthouse and the small museum as well. Boats are required by law to stay 1 kilometer off of the point to prevent them from disturbing the whales that come close to shore (where park visitors observe them). The rule is rarely if ever enforced for sea kayakers. However, in fairness to the visitors on shore, you should swing wide as you round the point. Boat-watchers can watch huge ships pause to pick up St. Lawrence pilots from the pilot station near Escoumins to help them pilot the river between here and Montreal. For this reason international shipping comes quite close to shore. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
