South of Point Pelee and north of Sandusky, Ohio, is Pelee Island. This 10,000-acre island is the largest island in Lake Erie, and the southernmost land area in Canada. This quiet rural community has a year-round population of 275 people and a summer population of about 1,000. The island is not a wilderness island although it does have nature reserves on its northern and southern tips. Seen from the air the island looks like a quilt; most of the land area is devoted to crops and vineyards. As with Point Pelee, the southern latitude and the moderating effects of Lake Erie make the climate very mild. Many southern plant and animal species found here are not found elsewhere in Canada. Located near the U.S.-Canada border at the southernmost end of the Pelee Passage, the island has an interesting history, from shipwrecks to Prohibition-era rumrunners. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
