Locally, the section from Remmel Dam to Rockport is simply known as the Rockport Run. The actual run is rarely done, as there is but one class II drop and that is at the takeout at Rockport. The Rockport Ledge, just upstream of the I-30 bridge, has become a favorite for paddlers in the Little Rock area, however. Most paddlers simply put-in at the Rockport Ledge. There is a very small ledge downstream, just past the bridge, and another class II drop at the old Tanner Street Bridge. It is common to see a multitude of brightly colored kayaks playing in the upper ledge on most weekdays and every weekend throughout the summer. The river run from Remmel Dam to the Rockport Ledge is a scenic class I float. At higher levels, you need to be aware of swift current that can wash you into trees. At the normal full-generation/recreational-release flow, the river is reasonably swift in the first couple of miles and then slows down for the last few miles. There are only a couple of riffles and one side channel at the top. At the lower, continuous-flow levels, paddlers must pick the correct course through several small rock gardens, and at the very lowest flow you might have to get out and drag over a very short shoal if you don’t pick a good line.
