Clear Creek begins just south of Winslow, Arkansas, and makes a mad dash southward to its confluence with Frog Bayou near Mountainburg, Arkansas, a distance of only 14 miles. Clear Creek’s watershed is small, but when it is up, it delights paddlers with a tight, technical class III run in the upper stretches and a great class II+ run on the lower section. Railroad tracks follow the creek for almost it entire length. In fact, this creek was the only route the railroad could find over the rugged Boston Mountains to Fayetteville years ago. The community of Schaberg was a resort that could only be reached by the railroad in the 1930s and 1940s. It is now a small community of private homes, so respect the owners’ rights while in the area. The upper section is remote, with no signs of civilization until paddlers are well past the recently constructed bridge for I-540. The only signs of civilization are the railroad and interstate, which crosses the creek four times. Water quality that was degraded during the construction of the interstate is now returning to normal.
