Richland Creek begins near the small community of Sandgap, located at the intersection of AR 7 and AR 16, and flows northeast for approximately 33 miles to its confluence with the Buffalo National River. The Ozark National Forest and the Richland Creek Wilderness Area protect the creek. Richland Creek can be characterized as a very tight, technical stream that is very sensitive to water levels. It is normally floatable when other streams are in flood. The creek flows swiftly over moderate shoals in the first few miles, until it reaches the gorge section and the bottom drops out. Paddlers are treated to a class III–IV whitewater jewel. The banks close in and funnel the water though narrow drops and over waterfalls up to 7 feet in height. There is little time to enjoy the beauty of the area from the water, so stopping to do so is a must. The area is one of the most scenic in the Ozarks. The whitewater does not let up until you reach Richland Creek Campground, and then just briefly before the excitement begins again in the second section.
