The Illinois Bayou begins on the eastern slopes of Divide Mountain near the small town of Tilly, Arkansas. The name bayou is deceptive, as this is truly a whitewater stream that flows southward to the backwaters of Lake Dardenelle near Russellville, Arkansas. The river flows through many willow jungles and over rock ledges, presenting paddlers with a very interesting run, and its isolated shoreline offers a good refuge to wildlife. Gently sloping banks of hardwood forests block the view of surrounding farmland, thereby adding to the wilderness experience, and help protect the water quality. The stream widens and slows after it passes Scottsville. The moderate gradient creates some class II rapids, especially in the upper sections and near the Hector Bridge.
