Hailstone River is a code name for the upper 16 miles of the Buffalo River above Boxley, Arkansas. Many years ago it was considered too difficult for most paddlers, and the name Hailstone was devised to protect the identity of this class III+ jewel. The ride down the shuttle road lets you know that this is no ordinary river. At the bottom, you are in one of the most remote wilderness gorges in the United States. Civilization is nonexistent for the next 14 miles. This run places you alone with nature at its best. The swift current takes you through short pools separated by steep drops that leave little time to enjoy the hardwood-lined canyon walls. Waterfalls cascade to the canyon floor, keeping the many native plants well nourished. Be sure to stop and enjoy this incredible beauty.
