The headwaters of the East Fork of the Illinois Bayou are south of AR 16 on the southern slope of Walker Mountain. The stream flows through the East Fork Wilderness Area, which was established by Congress in 1984. The 10,688-acre wilderness protects the East Fork of the Illinois Bayou from development and ensures pristine stream quality. Wilderness areas like the East Fork play an important role in achieving the Forest Service’s stated mission: “to secure for the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an enduring resource of wilderness.” The Forest Service requires everyone to practice “leave no trace” principles when enjoying the East Fork Wilderness. Paddlers can expect a class II–II+ stream with rocky shoals, willow jungles, and scenic bluffs. The main hazard is downed trees that block your passage. Remember to scout ahead if your route is not clear.
