Big Piney Creek rises in the Boston Mountains near the small town of Fallsville, Arkansas, and flows generally southward to its confluence with Lake Dardanelle, a distance of approximately 67 miles. The headwaters of both the Buffalo and the Mulberry Rivers are within a few miles. Big Piney Creek is one of the more challenging streams in the state of Arkansas, offering paddlers rapids up to class III at optimum levels. Expect a pool-drop type of stream with a good current in the short pools and exciting rapids with large standing waves and occasional boulders in the main current. These rapids appear every quarter-mile at minimum and more often in many places. Paddlers are blessed with a panorama of remote and wild scenery, from the limestone bluffs that constrict the creek to one-third it normal size to the varied wildlife thriving in the natural refuge along the banks of Big Piney Creek. The water quality is good, and at normal levels the water flows the milky green color that is unique to Ozark streams. In addition, Longpool Campground is among the most beautiful campsites in the state of Arkansas. It’s worth the effort to make Longpool your base camp while paddling Big Piney Creek.
