A tributary of the Peace River, Shell Creek flows into the northeast corner of Charlotte Harbor. Its headwaters drain the ranchlands of eastern Charlotte County, and the stream is a designated Charlotte County Blueway. Named for embedded crustaceans in its upper banks, Shell Creek can be paddled to its uppermost narrow reaches east of Hathaway Park—the primary paddler access—and west to the Riverside boat ramp in Charlotte Harbor. Downstream from Hathaway Park, Shell Creek passes many houses while making a serpentine course to be dammed at Punta Gorda’s water-supply impoundment. This is also where Prairie Creek adds its flow. Below the dam, Shell Creek splits into channels, passes under the US 17 bridge, and then both comes under increasing tidal influence and experiences significant motorboat traffic.
