Flowing into the northeast corner of Charlotte Harbor, Prairie Creek provides a glimpse into Old Florida, of the landscape that cracker cowboys roamed before housing retirees became more profiable. Prairie Creek flows from eastern Charlotte and DeSoto County ranchlands before widening, breaking into numerous channels and old oxbows. It then merges into Shell Creek at a water-supply dam. An accessible upper stretch of Prairie Creek provides a quality freshwater paddling experience. Here, you can head up the dam-slowed stream that incessantly twists and narrows, eventually to become canopied and increasingly swift. This upper stretch can be paddled nearly 5 miles before fallen trees and creek size prohibit further travel, depending on whether other paddlers have kept this uppermost of the uppermost stretch open.
