It used to be that paddlers looked at big rivers as places to be avoided. But nowadays, if there’s water flowing—no matter how big or small—you might see a kayak or canoe plying it. The St. Johns River is one such body of water, and this paddle explores an ideal portion of the St. Johns, along with an old channel that offers historical enhancement to the adventure. Starting near the town of DeLand, paddlers can head downstream on the St. Johns River, bordered almost entirely by wildlife refuge and national forest, creating eye-appealing scenery. Bend with the waterway, scoping for wildlife before you turn up a former channel of the St. Johns—the St. Francis Dead River. Paddle up the slender channel, reaching an old tram track where you can get out and link to the St. Francis Hiking Trail, exploring an abandoned river town. After that, circle the embayment, then head back up the St. Johns, this time against the current.
