More and more paddlers are looking for paddling circuits—loops—that cover new and wild water while avoiding shuttles. This paddling trip is a response to that and is an official blueway under the banner of Lake County. It starts at a rustic fish camp on Lake Dexter, part of the greater St. Johns River, then explores part of Lake Dexter to find an ancient Indian mound at Bowers Bluff. Next, reach island-studded Stagger Mud Lake, one of the all-time great Florida lake names. The wild shores are part of the Ocala National Forest and are a fine place to spot waterfowl, songbirds, and raptors. Add to your adventure by paddling up Stagger Creek until it closes in. After you’ve circled Stagger Mud Lake, it’s a simple backtrack to the landing on Lake Dexter.
