Blue Creek is essentially a channel of the St. Johns River, running through the Ocala National Forest before rejoining the St. Johns just before the St. Johns enters massive Lake George, one of my favorite stillwater paddling places in the Sunshine State. Blue Creek is known for alligators and manatees in the summertime. However, any time of year will treat the paddler, though Blue Creek is run by motorboats. So if you are looking for solitude, paddle this stream when you think the boaters will be home. The trip starts on Lake George. Get a taste of the apparently boundless lake before turning up the St. Johns, then spurring into Blue Creek, bordered on both sides by national forest. The winding run leads through a natural setting until reaching the community of Astor and the St. Johns River. Your best bet here is to turn down the St. Johns, enjoying the current, since the initial paddle on Blue Creek is upstream. This loop circles Blue Island.
