This may be the most biologically diverse paddle in the Everglades. It starts on the Tamiami Trail in the Big Cypress National Preserve amid a freshwater environment dominated by towering cypress trees. It opens into sawgrass broken with occasional tree islands, makes a tight squeeze through eerie tree tunnels, then transforms to classic mangrove zone environment before reaching Hurddles Creek. Continue down the Turner River as it opens up and passes a tall historic Calusa Indian mound before arriving at civilized Chokoloskee Island. Be apprised that the paddling on this trail can be tough. At, ?rst shallow water and hydrilla, an underwater plant, combine for slow going.
