Located in a once quiet area now being overwhelmed by Fort Myers to the north and Naples to the south lies the community of Estero. Bounded on the west by Estero Bay and on the east by the Corkscrew Swamp, Estero was established in 1894 by a religious visionary from Chicago, Dr. Cyrus Reed Teed. The section of the Estero River covered here, part of the of?cial state paddling trail, extends for 5 miles from the point where it passes beneath US 41 until it ?ows into Estero Bay. Along this course, the character of the river changes dramatically. Beginning as a narrow waterway channeled by limestone and shaded by large oaks, it eventually broadens as it ?ows through the spartina grass and mangrove of the tidal marsh.
