One of Florida’s designated state scenic rivers, the Myakka originates in east central Manatee County, in cattle country. From there it winds southwesterly, enters Sarasota County, and becomes a central feature of Myakka River State Park, a 58-square-mile park. While in the park it merges with Clay Gully and opens into Upper Myakka Lake, a beautiful expanse of water known for its alligators. Upper Myakka Lake is the beginning for paddlers, and the river is generally paddleable year-round from this point. Upper Myakka Lake empties into a river channel bordered by open grasses and some hardwood hammocks. Entrance into the preserve is limited to 30 people per day, and a permit is required.
