The Manatee River flows into the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay west of the city of Bradenton after extending for nearly 40 miles through central Manatee County. It is supplied principally from 150 square miles of watershed, and along its entire length countless creeks drain their contents into it. The river traverses the Gulf Coastal lowlands, and the surrounding area is marked by pine fl atwoods, sandhills, and hammock communities. In the 1960s, a dam was constructed on the river and Lake Manatee was formed. This 2,400-acre reservoir provides potable water for Sarasota and Manatee Counties and is also part of Lake Manatee State Park, which offers boating, swimming, and camping. The dam gates are opened at irregular intervals to release over?ow into the river, especially after heavy rains. In the narrow river channel near the dam, the discharge from the lake can raise the water level several feet in an hour. The opening of the gates is announced well in advance by a series of siren blasts from the dam structure.
