For about 40 miles, the Little Manatee stretches across southern Hillsborough County from its origin as a tightly twisting creek near Fort Lonesome and Wimauma, until it broadens and empties into Tampa Bay near Ruskin. The Little Manatee River is now a mostly protected watershed, thanks to the state of Florida and Hillsborough County. Little Manatee River State Park has existed for some time now, and the state and county have purchased additional parcels. This protection is partly due to Little Manatee River’s designation as an Outstanding Florida Water. Now, in ever-expanding coastal Florida, this river will remain an enchanting place to wet your boat. If you paddle the Little Manatee River in the dry winter months, you will encounter a shallow, narrow waterway enclosed by steep banks, heavily vegetated with oaks, pines, willows, and an occasional cedar. High above, the trees form a thick canopy that shades most of the river and, below, numerous small beaches will invite you to stop and enjoy a refreshing swim.
