The Hillsborough is a long and diverse river, flowing for nearly 54 miles from the Green Swamp north of Lakeland to Hillsborough Bay in Tampa. The state-designated paddling trail is rich with history. Thousands of years ago, the Timucuan and Calusa tribes inhabited the surrounding land, and remnants of their burial mounds can still be found not far from the river. The Seminoles, a mixture of northern Creeks and the surviving Calusas, later emerged along the Hillsborough. The river is fed by 690 square miles of natural drainage, most of which results from ?ve main tributaries, including Flint and Blackwater Creeks. During the wet summer season, rain runoff swells the river, while during the dry winter and spring months, the water level is low and maintained primarily by base ?ow from Crystal Springs near the Green Swamp headwaters.
