Florida has approximately 320 springs, which discharge an estimated 8 billion gallons of water a day. Seventy-seven of these are first-magnitude springs (discharging 64.6 million gallons per day or more). Of these, many have been left natural and incorporated into state parks or major recreation areas, while others, such as Weeki Wachee, were once developed commercially. Weeki Wachee Springs has now been purchased by the state of Florida, and its longtime status as an attraction complete with mermaids and waterslides is up in the air. The natural aspects of the spring will be protected, especially with the purchase of adjacent river lands by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. However, many riverside houses have been built and others have been here for some time.
