The Loxahatchee is the only stream in Florida to be designated a National Wild and Scenic River, and just a few minutes on the stream will convince you that this designation is richly deserved. The upper river is a delight to kayakers and canoeists as it zigzags through a stunningly beautiful cypress swamp. Shortly after entering Jonathan Dickinson State Park, the Loxahatchee changes abruptly as it takes on the sedate character of an estuarine mangrove swamp. It is customary for paddlers to take a lunch break at the Trapper Nelson Interpretive Site. Trapper Nelson, “the wild man of the Loxahatchee,” was a locally famous eccentric who developed a unique homestead years ago along the Loxahatchee. Canoe docks, picnic facilities, and drinking water are available at Trapper Nelson’s. Park rangers give daily presentations on the wildlife, vegetation, and lore of the Trapper Nelson site. Loxahatchee translates from Native American as “Turtle River.” During low water, common in winter, paddlers will have to pull their boats and longer kayaks will have difficulty maneuvering the sharp bends and fallen trees of the upper Loxahatchee
