As with many waterways on the Atlantic Coast, Spruce Creek has been a desirable target for people who want to live on the water. The attendant development around such residential areas has followed. Over time, accesses have been cut off and more of the creek has become lined with houses. The good news is that a lower portion of Spruce Creek is part of the Volusia County park system, in Spruce Creek Park. Paddlers should note that the canoe launch is not usable at low tide; however, paddlers in an estuarine waterway such as this should always plan their excursions around the tides. The Cracker Creek launch at Gamble Place, upstream of I-95, has no such tidal concern. Cracker Creek is a private nature preserve on the banks of Spruce Creek.
