The north-flowing Tomoka River drains a narrow coastal region between the Halifax River lagoon and the St. Johns River valley. The Tomoka provides a diverse paddling experience. The upper river is narrow and flows between tall cypresses; in contrast, the lower river is broad and flows through the open expanses of a coastal marsh. A substantial portion of the lower Tomoka lies within Tomoka State Park and presents a natural shoreline. Because Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach have grown so much, upper river accesses have been cut off. The most popular launch is at the state park, where paddlers are welcome and boats are for rent.
