The Econlockhatchee River, known to locals as the “Econ,” is a jewel in the midst of fast-developing eastern Orange and Seminole Counties. This beautiful stream has mostly escaped the rampant growth that has consumed many of the area’s natural attributes. The upper river challenges your paddling skills as it winds through the dim light of a mysterious cypress forest. Not far below the CR 419 bridge, the river reacquires a wild aura as it passes through the Little Big Econ State Forest. Things are slow and easy on the lower river as the Econ enters the open expanse of the St. Johns valley. Those with a bent for the supernatural may be interested in the glowing Oviedo Lights. Many people claim to have seen them at night above the water while standing on the CR 419 bridge. This strange luminescent phenomenon has long been part of the local lore of the Econ.
