Blackwater Creek—tight and hauntingly beautiful as it snakes through an ancient, maybe prehistoric, cypress swamp—is thought by many locals to be the “impassable waterway.” Born on the waters of Lake Norris, it stretches for over 20 miles, eventually emerging onto the Wekiva River just upstream from the St. Johns River. Many hardy souls have tried to traverse the entire waterway and have met with diffi culties—extreme difficulties. The middle section is mined with dead snags hiding in tea-stained low water, and nature has barricaded the lower reaches with countless deadfalls. Past the confluence with Seminole Creek and Sulphur Run, the waterway totally disappears into a myriad of tiny fingers, none large enough to support a canoe, and doesn’t reform until just prior to the Wekiva.
