Salt Springs, so named for the minerals in its waters, pours forth more than 60 million gallons of water per day. A vast recreation area has been developed around these springs, including a campground, swimming area, day-use area, and marina downstream from the springs. Despite the overwhelming presence of humans on its upper stretches, the setting becomes wild once downstream. Salt Springs Run is known for its wildlife. However, this scenery comes with a price as the 4-mile trip ends at Lake George, where there is no takeout, forcing paddlers to paddle upstream against the current. Paddlers can scout part of their run via the Salt Springs Trail, which leads to the south bank of the run below the springs.
